The Visserschool is a Peaceful School. What does that mean? It means we are part of a national program for primary schools where there is a focus on social competencies and democratic citizenship. These are two aspects which are an important part of the education we provide. The program views the classroom and the school as a community in which children need to feel recognized; a place where they have a say. Children at the Visserschool learn how to take decisions together and how to resolve conflicts. They feel responsible and involved in what happens at school.
A Peaceful School also has mediators. Mediators are pupils from years 7 and 8 who mediate during a conflict. This a job they had to apply for. Mediators and teachers have attended special training sessions. There are two mediators on duty each day. They patrol the playground during break-time in a recognizable vest and help resolve any conflicts they come across.
