Methods

Lessons in year 1 and 2 are thematic. English classes are based on the Oxford Show and Tell Method. Various activities inspire children to explore a theme. Children are taught the language skills they need to discuss a theme during the activities performed. The goal: to learn English whilst they are playing! Children learn English words, sentences, rhymes and stories. In groep 1 and 2 we use the system – one day, one language. This means we  have two days where the English will be the main language used in every class. All specialist teachers (physical education, crafts, arts and music) teach mainly in English.

Children in years 3 are mainly being thought in Dutch because of the time-consuming reading process. As if we prefer quality above quantity, we do not rush this system. In the afternoons they work thematic in English on global awareness issues. Themes are introduced using a video for example. Pupils answer questions about the theme and are encouraged to think about it. They are then given more information via texts or a website which focus on different aspects of the theme. Children are then asked to write about what they've learnt. The process is concluded with a presentation. All specialist teachers (physical education, crafts, arts and music) teach mainly in English.

Children in year 4 follow the same system as in group 1 and 2: one day, one language. This means we have two days where the English will be the main language used in every class.  English classes are based on the Oxford Discovery method. Various activities inspire children to explore a theme. Children are taught the language skills they need to discuss a theme during the activities performed. All years are taught all four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. All specialist teachers (physical education, crafts arts and music) teach mainly in English.

Children in years 5-8 follow intensive English lessons. As they have not benefited from the bilangual system, they have different goals. All specialist teachers (physical education, craft and arts and music) teach mainly in English.
